Art enriches children’s lives on every level. Art is far more than a hobby—it’s a vital part of a child’s growth. Through drawing, painting, and cartooning, children not only express themselves creatively but also develop critical thinking, fine motor skills, emotional resilience, and confidence.

As parents, educators, or mentors, we can make a lasting impact by guiding them through the fundamentals of art while keeping it playful and fun.  Teaching the Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting traditional art skills doesn’t need to be formal or strict.

Here are a few ways we gently teach the basics while keeping the process fun and encouraging:

    1. Basic Shapes and Simple Forms like cubes, and cylinders.

This helps with both cartooning and realism.

    2. Introduce Line and Contour Drawing

Teach them how to use outlines to define shapes.

    3. Explore Light, Shadow, and Texture

Use simple objects like fruit or toys to practice shading. Explain how light hits the object and where shadows fall.

    4. Teach Color in Playful Ways

Mixing paint is like a science experiment.  Let them experiment freely without worrying about “right” answers.

    5. Encourage Observation

Have them draw from life—a pet, a plant, a sibling’s shoe. This trains the eye to see what’s really there, a vital skill for both traditional and stylized art.

    • One-to-One Instruction about 20 minutes each class with Greg Storer, professional painter for over 40 years.

I’ll teach you the foundational skills you need to get started with drawing and painting. Whether you’re a total beginner or just looking to refresh your skills, you’ll learn important concepts like shading, composition, color mixing, brush techniques, and more. But here’s the best part — we do it all in a laid-back, friendly environment where creativity and fun go hand in hand.

I believe that the best learning happens when you’re enjoying yourself. That’s why I design each session to be interactive, playful, and pressure-free. We’ll experiment with different materials, try creative challenges, and even laugh through the occasional “happy accident” — because making mistakes is part of the process, and sometimes they lead to the best surprises.

No rigid rules, no harsh critiques. Just a chance to express yourself, grow your skills, and discover the joy of making art.

So if you’ve been waiting for the right time to start your artistic journey, this is it. Come join us — bring your curiosity, your sense of humor, and a willingness to try something new. Let’s make art together, and have a great time doing it.
